Taking Care of Your Mental Health as a Man

Mental health is a vital aspect of well-being that affects every area of life, from work and relationships to physical health and happiness. However, many men struggle with mental health issues and face barriers to getting the support they need. Since it's Men's Mental Health Month, in this article, we will explore some of the common challenges that men face when it comes to their mental health, and I will offer some tips on how to take care of yourself and seek help if need be.

The Stigma

For a very long time, there has been a stigma towards men's mental health. Many people today, especially Gen Z and millennials, hold a negative view of men. According to society, men are often seen as evil and misogynistic, and this view has led to men being sidelined and their needs being neglected. Yes, there are some bad apples, but that doesn’t make it right to generalise all men or view them as villains. Men and women must coexist for our human race to thrive. So if you hold this view towards other men or yourself, please let it go, it’s not healthy.

What Affects Men's Mental Health Negatively?

Men's mental health issues can be influenced by a variety of factors, such as:

  • Biological Factors: Some mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety, may have a genetic component or be linked to hormonal changes or brain chemistry. Sometimes it can be something that is passed on by DNA.
  • Psychological Factors: Some men may experience stress, trauma, low self-esteem, negative emotions, or cognitive distortions that affect their mental health, sometimes due to external causes.
  • Social Factors: Some men may face pressure from societal expectations, stereotypes (as touched on earlier), or norms that shape their sense of identity, masculinity, and role in society. They may also encounter discrimination, violence, isolation, or a lack of social support, all of which can negatively impact their mental health.
  • Environmental Factors: Some men may be exposed to adverse living conditions, poverty, unemployment, or other challenges that can affect their mental health.

What Are Some Common Mental Health Issues Among Men?

Some of the common mental disorders that affect men include:

  • Depression: Depression is a mood disorder that causes persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, guilt, or worthlessness. It can also affect one's appetite, sleep, energy, concentration, and interest in activities. Depression can increase the risk of suicide among men and is also one of the common causes of suicide.
  • Anxiety: Anxiety is a disorder that causes excessive fear, nervousness, or worry about various situations or events. It can also cause physical symptoms such as racing heart, sweating, trembling, or shortness of breath. Anxiety can interfere with one's daily functioning and quality of life which can also take away peace of mind.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): PTSD is a disorder that develops after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, such as war, violence, abuse, or an accident. It can cause intrusive memories, nightmares, flashbacks, or avoidance of reminders of the trauma. It can also lead to emotional numbness, anger, irritability, or hypervigilance. While PTSD is commonly associated with soldiers, it can affect anyone who has experienced a traumatic event.
  • Substance Use Disorder (SUD): SUD is a disorder that involves the misuse of alcohol or drugs to cope with stress, emotions, or mental health issues. This can be done knowingly or unknowingly. Additionally, the use of pornography can serve as an escape from personal problems, but it can also cause or worsen existing mental health issues.
  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): ADHD is a disorder that affects one's ability to focus, pay attention, control impulses, or organise tasks. It can cause difficulties in school, work, or social situations. It can also affect one's self-esteem, motivation, or mood.

How to Improve Men's Mental Health

There are many ways that men can take care of their mental health and improve their well-being. Some of the ways are:

  • Seek Professional Help: If you are experiencing symptoms of a mental disorder or distress that interfere with your daily life, do not hesitate to reach out to a qualified mental health professional, such as a therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, or counsellor. They can provide you with a diagnosis, treatment, and support that suits your needs and goals. You can find a provider through your primary care doctor, insurance company, employer, or online directories such as social media or the internet.
  • Talk to Someone You Trust: Sometimes, just sharing your feelings, thoughts, or concerns with someone who listens and cares can make a significant positive difference to your mental health. You can talk to a counsellor, friend, family member, partner, colleague, or mentor who can offer you emotional support, advice, or feedback. You can also join a support group, online forum, or a helpline where you can connect with others who understand what you are going through. It often works better with people you know than with strangers you just met online.
  • Practice Self-Care: Taking care of your physical health can also benefit your mental health. You can practise self-care by eating a balanced diet, drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, avoiding alcohol and drugs, and managing any chronic conditions you may have. You can also practise self-care by engaging in activities that make you happy, relaxed, or fulfilled, such as hobbies, sports, music, art, or meditation. For me, reading the Bible and writing songs helps a bunch.
  • Challenge Negative Thoughts: Negative thoughts can affect your mood, self-esteem, and behaviour. You can challenge negative thoughts by identifying them, questioning their validity, and replacing them with more realistic and positive ones. Learn to be grateful, and compliment yourself to boost your confidence and optimism.

  • Set Goals and Take Action: Having a sense of purpose and direction can improve your mental health and motivation. Set specific and achievable goals, whether short or long-term, for different areas of your life, such as work, education, health, or relationships. You can also take action by breaking down your goals into smaller steps and tracking your progress and achievements.

    Men's mental health is an important yet often overlooked health concern. Men, just like women, face many challenges and barriers that can affect their mental health negatively and prevent them from getting the help they need. However, there are many ways that they can take care of themselves and seek help when necessary. By doing so, they can improve their well-being, happiness, and quality of life. Remember, you are not alone, and there is always hope.
